Our Story
We are two sisters, Hilde and Gunn, who have a great passion for Christmas and everything it entails in terms of traditions and family coziness. We were born and raised in Åkrehamn on Karmøy, which is known for having one of Norway's finest beaches.
Hilde has been making her original Santa Clauses since the early 1980s. This has been her great passion and hobby. Gunn, who has always had great faith in Hilde and her Santas, has long wished that those who like Hilde's Santas would not have to stand on long waiting lists. She wanted them to create designer Santas together from Hilde's original Norwegian barn Santas. In January 2017, they started Dahlsnissen together.
The dream is to showcase Hilde's unique Santas to the whole world.
Family-run
Together with a lovely family-run factory in Spain, a time-consuming but interesting process began.
We place high demands on quality. The supplier who knits the gnome clothes according to Hilde's design also supplies clothes to the British royal family.
The first gnome children who saw the light of day in 2017 were Krister and Andrea, named after Hilde's two children. The following year came Alida, named after Gunn's daughter. With her came Oscar, who is everyone's godchild.
The barn elves come with certificates.
Small pins with the Dahlsnisse logo are also attached to their clothes. The elf children are also stamped on the back of their necks.
We do our utmost to ensure the best quality, so that the elves can be inherited for generations.
Our elf children come as RED ELVES, for those who love to decorate with traditional Norwegian Christmas decorations.
GREY ELVES for those who prefer a more modern and classic bright Christmas living room.
You can also get a new family member that resembles your family. The elf children are now available with different hair and eye colors.
We wish to preserve Norwegian design and cultural history in an elegant and traditional way.
The Dahlsnisse is only produced in a limited edition each year.
My Childhood Christmas
The magic of Christmas has captivated me ever since I was a little girl.
The cozy Advent season from my bygone childhood, these are memories I will carry with me throughout my life. Traditions are very important for our family, and when the smell of pinnekjøtt (cured lamb ribs) spreads throughout the house, then it's finally Christmas Eve. Childhood memories, like when there was a knock at the door and we sat stiff with delight and anticipation, are never forgotten.
There were many Christmas guests, and we sat almost on top of each other. The guests enjoyed knocking a little before Santa arrived, and we jumped just as much every time. Little did I know then that it was precisely this fellow I would take with me through life's carousel.
About the designer Hilde Dahl
Now as an adult, I still feel the growing joy throughout my body as Christmas Eve approaches. Advent starts early, and we enjoy family time together. My daughter loves to bake, so we plan which Christmas cookies need to be made together. Like mother, like daughter, probably fits our family quite well <3
Ever since I was little, I've loved creating my own designs. Everything I made had to bear my personal touch. I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I also learned to knit and sew early in childhood from my dear mother, and my beloved grandmother taught me to crochet.
Faces have always fascinated me. So, in the early 1980s, I started sculpting in various materials. I was fortunate enough to attend several courses at the home of the renowned doll artist, Sissel B. Skille.
I loved creating these little original, fantastic beings.
One-of-a-kind elves.
My traditional Norwegian barn elves have now charmed their way into many Norwegian homes and other countries.
I have now developed a new series of designer elves. This exclusive collection of Dahlsnisser is made with high quality, so that the barn elves can be inherited for generations. I hope you will like my new elves and welcome them into your home.
So wonderful to be able to make gnomes all year round. If I don't get tired of it, no, it's absolutely fantastic. Imagine being allowed to be in the Christmas spirit, all year round.
Sincerely,
Hilde Dahl.
